New York City’s Air Force Museum has opened for the world’s first public exhibition of the original aircraft of the US military during World War II.
Visitors are welcome to explore the museum’s hangar-like interior, where visitors can view a collection of rare and original aircraft including the famous Lockheed Electra, which was built during World Wars I and II.
There will also be a small private aircraft museum, and a museum on display featuring WWII aircraft, and an air museum dedicated to the National Air and Space Museum (NASM).
New York City-based architect Daniel Fong, whose firm, Fong + Associates, is responsible for the renovation of the Museum of Modern Art, told the Times that the museum was the first of its kind in the US and the only museum in the world to feature aircraft from the Air Force.
“There are so many planes in the collection that are not on display at the Air Museum, so we wanted to make sure we gave visitors a chance to see them,” he said.
“We think it’s going to be an excellent addition to the museum.”
The Air Force’s Museum of Aviation, which opened in March, has more than 1,600 aircraft and over 1,000 aircraft related exhibits, including aircraft of World War I and WWII.
The museum is the world headquarters for the US Air Force, and is housed in the same building as the National Museum of the United States Air Force (NMUSAF).
Fong added that the first two-hour museum visit for the public is a special one.
“It’s a chance for visitors to explore and see some of the things that they have been missing out on,” he told the paper.
“When you come in and you see what’s going on at the museum, it’s a unique experience.”
“I think it will be an exceptional addition to a very interesting collection that is already there,” he added.
The museum is also the first museum in New York to include aircraft of both World War One and World War Two.
“The Air Museum is a major piece of the National Aviation Museum, and the new addition will complement the existing collection and create a new place for visitors, including students and military personnel,” the museum said.
“The new Air Museum has a rich history and a rich legacy that dates back to World War 2, and will complement its collection with the many artifacts of the Air Forces history and the world that has come before.”
The Museum of Air and Flight opened in 1945 as the Air National Guard’s Air Museum and is located at the corner of Lexington and Washington streets in Manhattan.
