A massive renovation of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City has not yet been completed, with its $1.2 billion price tag having reached $4.8 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.
However, the $1 billion is still far above the $4 billion that the museum had planned to spend on its new flagship.
While the museum was slated to complete the renovation by the end of 2019, it has yet to formally submit its plans to the city for approval.
The museum was originally scheduled to open in 2021.
“It will not be finished in 2019,” museum President Daniel S. Goldblatt told the paper.
“I can’t guarantee it will be finished by 2020.”
The museum is located in the Financial District and will open in 2022.
“They’ve been working on it for three years and they’ve been trying to figure out what the best way to do it, but they’re going to have to do a lot of work to figure that out,” Goldblat said.
“And that’s not going to be a good solution for our patrons.”
The New York Times reported in January that some of the work was to be done by contractors.
While Goldblant said that the work would be done quickly, he acknowledged that it was a “big job” and said that he would “never be able to put a figure on how much it is going to cost.”
In January, the museum announced that it would start hiring, with the goal of hiring 100 people a month by the middle of next year.
The new renovation will add a new gallery to the existing museum and also expand the collection.
“The project is really ambitious,” Goldflatt said.
However the work is “a little bit messy” and “we’ll figure out a solution to that in a few months.”
Goldblats office in Newyork is being demolished and will be replaced by a glass-and-steel building.
The site is also being redeveloped into apartments, and plans are also underway for a major expansion of the museum’s new collection.
In December, the New York Daily News reported that the Metropolitan Library System had awarded a $3.5 million contract to the Newseum Museum of American Art to oversee the renovation.
The contract is to be used to “modernize” the collection and restore its structure and exhibits.
“At a time when we need to restore our collections, the Met’s Museum of the American Renaissance is the perfect fit for the task,” Newsekum President Scott Hirsch said in a statement.
“We believe that the new collection, now complete, will be a critical resource for future generations and the entire nation.”
“We’ve been in this for 20 years and this is the best possible way to go forward,” Hirsch told the New Yorker.
